How to book your learner's licence test

Where you book depends on where you live. The national government says all Gauteng residents should apply online on the NaTIS site, online.natis.gov.za. In the Western Cape you book in person at a driving licence testing centre (DLTC). Anywhere else, ask your testing centre which way it works.

Where do I book my learner's licence test?

You book either on the NaTIS website or at a testing centre, and your province decides which.

The national government service page says to go to your nearest DLTC to book a test date. The same page says all Gauteng residents should apply online at online.natis.gov.za. Mogale City, a Gauteng municipality, says the same thing on its licensing page: bookings must be done online.

The Western Cape Government page tells you to visit your nearest DLTC. The City of Cape Town and George Municipality also describe booking in person. When Cape Town moved to the computerised test in 2026, the City said the booking system stays the same.

Guides do not agree on which other provinces take online bookings. Open the NaTIS site and see if your province is offered, or ask your testing centre. You can find centres in the test centres list on K53 Tutor.

How do I book my learner's test online?

You make a profile on the NaTIS site, choose a testing centre, and pick a date and time. A May 2026 report in The Citizen gives these steps:

1. Go to online.natis.gov.za and create an online profile. 2. Select the learner's licence booking. 3. Choose a driving licence testing centre. 4. Select an available date and time.

A March 2026 guide on a Gauteng visitor site says you will be asked for your full name and surname, your South African ID or passport number, your cellphone number and your email address. Have these ready before you start.

Save or print the booking confirmation. Mogale City says the booking must be confirmed before the expiry date shown on the confirmation, so read it the same day and do what it says. If the site does not tell you how to pay the booking fee, ask the testing centre.

How do I book in person at a testing centre?

You go to the centre with your documents, fill in a form, have an eye test, pay, and get a test date. The steps below come from the national government page and the Western Cape and George pages.

1. Go to your nearest DLTC. 2. Fill in the Application for learner's licence form (LL1). The centre gives it to you. The Western Cape page says to bring a pen. 3. Hand in your ID, two identical ID photographs and proof of address. 4. Have an eye test at the centre, or bring an eye test result from a qualified optometrist. 5. Pay the booking fee. 6. Get your test date. Keep the receipt, because you must show it on the day of the test.

In Cape Town the City says the test date is generated by the eNaTIS computer system once you have applied and paid.

What do I need before I can book?

You need to be old enough and have the right documents. For a car (a code 2 learner's licence) you must be 17 or older on the date of the test.

The national government page lists these things to take when you book:

  • An identity document
  • Two identical black-and-white ID photographs
  • Proof of postal and residential address, for example a utility account
  • The booking fee

If you live in an informal settlement, the page says to bring a letter with an official date stamp from your ward councillor that confirms your address. If you are 65 or older you also fill in a medical certificate form (MC). In the Western Cape, an applicant under 18 needs an affidavit from an adult confirming the address.

What do I do when there are no slots?

Try another testing centre, and keep checking, because waiting times differ a lot from one centre to the next.

The City of Cape Town publishes its waiting times. On 5 October 2026 the wait for a learner's licence test ranged from 15 days at Kuils River to 83 days at Eastridge, with an average of 44 days across the City's centres. A centre a little further away can save you weeks.

For online bookings, one May 2026 guide says to look again early in the morning, because cancelled bookings open up new dates.

Once you have a date, keep it. The City of Cape Town says you can only cancel if you are sick, attending a funeral or writing exams, with proof, and that your payment is not refunded if you cancel. The City also says backlogs grow when people do not arrive for their appointments.
