No overtaking lines

No overtaking lines: what it means

Sign RM1

What it means

It is prohibited (not allowed) to drive with any part of your vehicle on the right-hand side of this line.

What you must do

Do not cross the line. Keep your whole vehicle on the left of it, unless one of the three exceptions applies.

Where you see it

On any road that carries two-way traffic (traffic from opposite directions).

Remember

Three exceptions: into an entrance, out of an entrance, past a stationary obstruction.

You may cross the line only:

  • to gain direct access to (drive straight into) an entrance on the other side of the line
  • to drive from such an entrance onto the road
  • to pass a stationary (standing still) obstruction

In all these cases you must make sure that it is safe to do so.
